With spring emerging I am again reflecting on baseball and our communities. As Opening Day of the new season comes I was thinking of the movement over the past years to define their old “stadiums” with words such as “ballparks” or “park” such as Great American Ball Park and Miller Park. Some are referred to as “fields” such as Citi Field and still some wear the title of “yards” such as Camden Yards. These are not new terms as two of the oldest baseball structures are Fenway Park and Wrigley Field but these were the exception for many years. It’s interesting that we have gone back to old words.
It may just be language but there’s also been movement to install more of the charm and character of the parks of years ago. These are billion dollar businesses with often-expensive tickets but it does seem to be a reflection of a longing for places that reflect the history, character and spirit of the cities and citizens. And in our neighborhoods aren’t we longing for the days when you knew all of your neighbors and everyone belonged.
Along with the new fields, on Opening Day there comes energy for possibility. What might the new season hold? Yesterday I watched the passion of fans as they welcomed their hometown team back. Hopefully a great season for the home team and the possibility of stronger neighborhoods. Play Ball!
